The main purpose of Quamut Wiki is to provide a forum in which you can share your own helpful how-to content. Nearly all how-to topics are appropriate (and encouraged!) as subjects for Quamut Wikis. That said, there are a few requirements for acceptable content on Quamut Wiki, as explained below. Quamut Wikis should:
- Be actionable: The best way to gauge whether a Quamut Wiki is or isn’t how-to is to ask whether it’s actionable—does the Wiki provide information that another person can act on in some way? If the answer is yes, then it’s how-to. If the Wiki is merely descriptive, such as an article on the history of the unicycle, it’s not how-to and doesn’t belong on Quamut Wiki.
- Be original: The content that you contribute to Quamut Wiki must be written in your own words. Never use text or any other type of content created by someone else or already published elsewhere online or in print. See the Quamut Wiki copyright policy for more specific info on how to tell if text is acceptable for submission.
- Be neutral: Quamut Wikis should avoid any reference to politics, religion, race, or other issues that could detract from the Wiki’s neutrality.
- Be practical: Only Wikis on subjects that people can actually do are appropriate. For instance, “How to Travel Back in Time” is not an acceptable Quamut Wiki.
- Not encourage dangerous, violent, illegal, or hate-based behavior: Wikis containing how-to information likely to cause harm to oneself or another, that promote hate-based ideas or actions, or that encourage any type of illegal behavior will be deleted.
- Not be used to advertise or promote: How-to articles often mention, recommend, or explain how to use specific products or services. That’s fine, and even recommended. However, Wikis designed solely to advertise or promote a specific product, service, website, blog, band, individual and so on are not appropriate.
- Not contain excessive humor or sarcasm: It’s fine to infuse your writing with personality and occasional wit, but Wikis written solely as humor or sarcasm pieces are not appropriate.
- Not contain explicit sexually oriented subject matter: Quamut Wikis on practical matters related to sexuality, such as How to Get Tested for an STD, are acceptable. Wikis that contain explicit sexual content, such as How to Please Your Lover in Bed, are not appropriate.
- Not just contain a list of links: It’s often helpful to include links to other websites, but no Quamut Wikis should contain only a list of links. Instead, include links within the context of the Wiki.
